Shoes for Diabetics with Medicare Coverage

The Medicare Therapeutic Shoe bill was enacted by Congress in order to provide proper footwear and inserts for people with diabetes who qualify under Medicare Part B. Eligible patients qualify for one pair of shoes, plus 3 pairs of inserts for each calendar year.

Medicare will reimburse 80 percent of the amount allowed, and a secondary insurance usually pays for the remaining 20 percent. If a patient does not have a secondary insurance provider, they are then responsible for paying the remaining 20 percent in addition to any "Luxury Upgrade" costing more than the predetermined amount that Medicare will cover.
